KROBO beads, made by the Krobo people from the Krobo region in Ghana, are made from powder glass, which comes from finely ground glass most commonly made out of recycled broken bottles and other scrap glasses.

These beautiful glass beads are made in vertical molds. Each mold is filled with finely ground glass which is layered to create different colorful designs. The beads are cooked in clay kilns until the recycled glass fuses.

Designs on the beads are made with a paste made of colored glass powder and water, which is applied by hand using a thin wooden stalk. The beads are cooked a second time to fix the design. Many designs of Krobo beads are patterned to resemble old Venetian fancy trade beads. Each bead is truly unique!
